Introduced in October of 2008, the Sun Enterprise T5440 Server is the most powerful – and only scalable – of Sun’s line of Coolthreads® servers, which also includes the Sun Fire T1000, the Sun Fire T2000, the Sun Enterprise T5120, the Sun Enterprise T5140, the Sun Enterprise T5220, and the Sun Enterprise T5240 servers. They’re named Coolthreads® both because of their chip multithreading technology – CMT, and their low power consumption that allows them to run ‘cooler’ than comparable machines from other server manufacturers.

At the time of its product announcement, the Sun Enterprise T5440 was billed as the “World’s first quad-socket, general-purpose server powered by the UltraSPARC T2 Plus “system on a chip” processor.

The Sun Enterprise T5440 server provides the flexibility and power of 256 virtual systems in a single server, and more than 2,500 compute threads per rack.

Other features of the T5440 include: One to four CPUs that are 8 core 1.2 GHz, 1.4 GHz, or 1.6 GHz UltraSPARC T2 plus processors; up to 512 GB of memory using 8 GB DIMMs; up to 4 ea. 300 GB SAS disk drives or 32 GB 2.5-Inch SATA SSDs (solid state drives), integrated on-chip cryptographic acceleration and on-board 10-gigabit Ethernet for secure computing and high-speed networking.

They’re named Coolthreads® both because of their chip multithreading technology – CMT, and their low power consumption that allows them to run ‘cooler’ than comparable machines from other server manufacturers.

At the time of its product announcement, the Sun Enterprise T5140 was billed as “the World’s first dual-socket, general-purpose CMT server powered by the 3rd generation UltraSPARC T2 Plus processor.”

Only configured with two CPUs, the Sun Enterprise T5140 server provides the flexibility and power of 128 virtual systems in a single server, and 5,120 compute threads per rack.

Other features of the T5140 include: CPUs that are 4, 6, or 8 core 1.2 GHz, 8 core 1.4 GHz, or 8 core 1.6 GHz UltraSPARC T2 processors; up to 128 GB of memory using 8 GB DIMMs; up to 4 ea. 300 GB SAS disk drives or 32 GB 2.5-Inch SATA SSDs (solid state drives), integrated on-chip cryptographic acceleration and on-board 10-gigabit Ethernet for secure computing and high-speed networking.

When it was introduced in November of 2007, the Sun Enterprise T5120 was billed as “the world’s ultimate virtualization server” because it was the fastest server designed for virtualization at the time of its debut. Like the Sun Enterprise T5220, the Sun Enterprise T5120 server provides the flexibility and power of 64 virtual systems in a single server, giving maximum energy efficiency, with the industry’s best performance per watt.

Other features of the T5120 include: UltraSPARC T2 processor technology with CPUs that are 4, 6, or 8 core 1.2 GHz, 8 core 1.4 GHz, or 8 core 1.6 GHz UltraSPARC T2 processors with one processor per system and a maximum of 64 threads; up to 128 GB of memory using 8 GB DIMMs; and up to 8 ea. 300 GB SAS disk drives or 32 GB 2.5-Inch SATA SSDs (solid state drives).

Introduced in December 2005 as a non-RoHS machine, the Sun Fire T2000 server was revised in April of 2006 to a RoHS version, and an Enterprise version May 2007, which coincided with the introduction of the Enterprise version of the Sun Fire T1000. The Sun Fire T2000 Server is part of Sun’s line of Coolthreads® servers, so named because of their chip multithreading technology – CMT, and their low power consumption that allows them to run ‘cooler’ than comparable machines from other vendors. Since its introduction Sun has also introduced the Sun Enterprise T5120, the Sun Enterprise T5140, the Sun Enterprise T5220, the Sun Enterprise T5240, and the Sun Enterprise T5440 servers.

The Sun Fire T2000 Server has set new world records for the SPECjAppServer2004. SPECjbb2005, and SPECweb2005 benchmarks, beating all other 2-way and less servers. Driven by the world’s most energy efficient processors, the Sun Fire T2000 server supports more demanding workloads in less space and energy than any other system – again – at the time of its introduction. A throughput-optimized server with up to 32 threads per processor supporting up to 64 GB RAM, the T2000 allows you to drive up utilization, drive down costs, and massively consolidate workloads with built-in, no-cost virtualization technology with Logical Domains (LDoms) and Solaris Containers.

The T2000 has three times the throughput at 30 percent less power and cooling costs of competitive servers.

The Sun Fire T2000 was EOL’d (end-of-lifed) in October 2009 and replaced with the Sun Enterprise T5120 and the Sun Enterprise T5220.

The Sun Fire T1000 set a new world record by delivering 51,540 BOPS for the SPECjbb2005 Benchmark, beating all other 2-way and less servers. Driven by the world’s most energy efficient processors, the Sun Fire T1000 server supports more demanding workloads in less space and energy than any other system – again – at the time of its introduction. A throughput-optimized server with up to 32 threads per processor, all in a 1U package, the T1000 delivers more than 5x the throughput per rack of Xeon-based servers running Java applications.

the Sun Fire T1000 and Enterprise T1000 were EOL’d (end-of-lifed) in October of 2006 and replaced with the Sun Enterprise T5120 and the Sun Enterprise T5220.
